Poll: Najib still prime minister of choice (NST)

KUALA LUMPUR: An opinion poll carried out in Penang, Kedah and Perlis recently showed that Datuk Seri Najib Razak is still the prime minister of choice for the majority of the people there.

The poll, conducted by the Malaysian Political Research institute, National Professors Council and Universiti Utara Malaysia involved 1,830 eligible voters, who were expected to cast their votes on Sunday.

The voters were engaged via telephone calls and ground interviews from April 23 until Sunday.

Stratified sampling (a method of sampling from a population) was used as the method of research, where topics, such as the party and prime minister of choice based on demographics and factors influencing the choice of candidates, were evaluated. In terms of the preferred prime minister for different races, Najib was still the primary choice.

In addition to getting the highest number of votes among male and female voters, all those in the government sectors were agreeable in retaining Najib as prime minister. Najib also received support from workers of different income levels, except those earning above RM5,000 and was given full support by young voters and people of different academic qualifications.

Despite GE13 being dubbed as the country's first "social media election", Najib, besides receiving support from the cyber-savvy population, also received the nod from the "anachronistic" masses.

The poll also showed that the party of choice among the people was still Barisan Nasional.

Voters who had no access to the Internet also preferred BN as the ruling party. A Majority of the voters in the poll also agreed that candidates could contest as an independent.
